What’s the best compact digital camera for travel?

The original Sony RX100 on Amazon

Before I say anything else, I should make it clear that I’m biased.  Why?  Because the original Sony RX100 is probably my favorite purchase of the past three years.

The Sony RX100 ($398.00 at Amazon) is perfectly pocketable and takes better pictures than most DSLRs.  For a long while, that would have gotten my vote for the best compact digital camera for travel.  Now a newer and even better version has come to the market: the Sony RX100 II ($548.00 at Amazon).

The Sony RX100

Let’s dial back a bit.  Back in 2012 I was fine with my Panasonic Lumix point-and-shoot.  Then I tried out my mom’s RX100 while we traveled through Barcelona…and I was hooked.  The color quality and low-light shooting blew me away.  Photos on the Sony were comparable to those taken with my beautiful but bulky DSLR (the excellent Nikon D7000).  They were definitely better than photos taken on my old Nikon D80 DSLR.

That might not have been my launching point for naming this the best compact digital camera for travel…except then the same thing happened again this summer.  I was traveling with a friend in Germany; she tried out my RX100 while we explored Berlin.  By the end of the week, she realized that she had to switch to the Sony RX100 line.

The new Sony RX100 II on Amazon: Same design, fancier features, and a fantastic improved sensor for better low-light shooting

In 2013, Sony released the Sony RX100 II ($548.00 at Amazon).  This 2013 model is similar to the original RX100–except that it’s even better.  The biggest change is the new “backlit” sensor, which means a 40% improvement in light sensitivity and even better low-light shooting.  That means a huge change from the already excellent low-light shooting on the RX100.

The new model also has a hot-shoe (for mounting accessories like an external flash or viewfinder), wifi, better video, and a tilting LCD screen.  The camera body is slightly thicker.

Would others call this the best compact digital camera for travel?  Well, countless reviewers around the internet rave about image quality on the Sony RX100 II (see PCMag, Gizmodo, and almost any result on a Google search for “Sony RX100 II”).  In the meantime, Amazon reviewers describe the RX100 II as “quite simple to navigate” and “a worthy upgrade from the RX100.”  Another describes it, right on point, as the “perfect travel camera.”

In short, this isn’t just the best compact digital camera for travel.  It’s the camera that turns DSLR aficionados into compact shooters.

Where can I find this travel gift?
