Traveling means sleeping at strange hours and in strange places.  It might leave you taking a morning siesta after a late-night hotel check in. It could mean dozing during a sunny overnight train ride in Norway.  For travelers who have trouble falling asleep with the sun in their eyes, travel sleep masks are more than cute stocking stuffers: they’re key travel accessories.

Top Pick: The Sleep Master Sleep Mask at Amazon

The best sleep mask for travel probably doesn’t look like a stuffed animal or smell like a day at the spa. Instead, it’s comfortable and inconspicuous.  The best sleep mask for travel also just works. After all, it’d be easier to just use that free eye mask the airline gave you last year, right? Except that the free goodies usually don’t do the best job of actually blocking out light for a pleasant night’s sleep.

Three of the most popular sleep masks for travel, from my research, were these three at Amazon: Sleep Master Sleep Mask, the Bucky Eye Mask, and the Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask.  All three got great reviews and comments across travel forums and blogs.

Second Runner Up: The Bucky Eye Mask at Amazon

After a bit of digging, my top pick for the best sleep mask for travel ended up being the Sleep Master Sleep Mask ($25.90 at Amazon).  I’ve been hunting for a sleep mask that won’t press uncomfortably against my eyes while I try to sleep, and this one fits the bill.  It doesn’t look too silly, it got great reviews on Amazon, and it’s designed to muffle noise in addition to blocking light. Since I’ve found that traveling makes me klutzier than usual, I also like the part where this travel sleep mask is hand washable!

Third Runner Up: The Lewis N. Clark Luggage Comfort 2 Pack Eye Mask With Adjustable Strap at Amazon

The Bucky Eye Mask ($9.99 at Amazon) also looks great. Recommended by Good Housekeeping, this is the best sleep mask for travel-loving fashionistas. It’s made from the same material as swimwear to conform easily to the curves of the face. The material and design make it super compact and lightweight. Also, it comes in lots of different designs and colors — making this sleep mask a fun and customizable gift.

The Lewis N. Clark Luggage Comfort 2 Pack Eye Mask ($14.99 at Amazon) is another solid option. I might not call it the best sleep mask for travel because the more discreet shape also means it could be less effective at blocking out light.  However, it’s soft, lightweight, and one of the few travel eye masks out there that’s adjustable even though there’s no velcro in the back.

What do you think about these sleep masks? Have you used a sleep mask during your travels?  Would you recommend it?

I bought the first one you mentioned (Escape Luxury Sleep Mask) via Amazon but wasn’t 100% successful in blocking out all the light under my nose. Ended up getting this memory foam one from TravelMore and it does the job perfectly. Highly recommend it. http://shoptravelmore.com/products/sleep-eyemask-with-earplugs

Thanks for the feedback, Monica! I checked out your link and noticed that the image is exactly the same as the Sweet Dreams Contoured Sleep Mask in this post. It might even be the same product. I’m glad to hear you found the right sleep mask for you!
